Once detected early, developmental delays need to be treated aggressively, preferably with etiologic treatment. For children with developmental delays for which no cause can be identified, symptomatic treatment is needed. For example, children with mental retardation need to be treated with medication for brain stimulation; children with brain dysplasia need to be treated for brain nutrition and promotion of brain development. For children with poor limb development or high muscle tone, rehabilitation training is needed; some children with poor active grasping need some fine function and occupational therapy (OT) training.
