Whether or not an ultrasound requires fasting depends on the part of the body being examined. Fasting needs to be considered for ultrasounds of the intra-abdominal organs, but not for ultrasounds of the bladder or gynecology. Fasting is generally not required if ultrasound of the bladder, kidneys, or uterus is being performed, as eating will not affect the results of the ultrasound. However, you need to drink water before the gynecological ultrasound to keep your bladder full and to be able to see the uterus better. In case of ultrasound examination of intra-abdominal organs, such as liver, pancreas, gallbladder and other organs, it is recommended to keep fasting before performing ultrasound examination of such parts as eating may affect the examination results. Patients requiring ultrasound are advised to do so under the supervision of a doctor.
