What to do about postpartum hypertension

If a patient develops hypertension after delivery, the first thing to do is to have a low-salt, low-fat diet, regular work and rest, avoid straining and staying up late, and relax, it is possible that the hypertension will gradually recover. If the patient is currently breastfeeding and the blood pressure has not improved well through lifestyle interventions, only antihypertensive medications should be taken if necessary. At this stage, if there is an increase in blood pressure and breastfeeding is present, it is recommended to take oral methyldopa, labetalol or nifedipine tablets. The preferred drug among these is methyldopa, which can be used in increased doses and more frequently depending on the actual blood pressure of the patient. If the patient has finished breastfeeding after delivery, he can switch to first-line antihypertensive drugs, such as prilosec, sartans, calcium channel blockers, etc., which are relatively more potent in lowering blood pressure and will make the blood pressure drop more smoothly, and can further identify the cause of high blood pressure.
