It doesn’t really matter what the normal range of astigmatism is, the ideal state is to have no astigmatism at all, however, this is less than 10% of the population. The essence of astigmatism is that the eyeball is not round enough in the coronal plane and is somewhat flattened, just like the shape of a person’s face, there is a distinction between a round face and a long face. Astigmatism is highly specific and different for each individual. 50 degrees of astigmatism will not significantly affect vision and does not require treatment. 75 degrees of astigmatism will cause mild blurring of vision. 125 degrees of astigmatism will cause difficulty in seeing and glasses are recommended. 200 degrees of astigmatism will cause amblyopia, which means that vision is still not clear even after glasses are put on. For children, glasses are necessary for astigmatism over 200 degrees.
