Can you get chicken pox twice?

Chickenpox is usually something you get once, but it is possible for the chickenpox virus to lurk in a person’s body and potentially cause disease at a later stage. Chickenpox is caused by varicella-zoster virus infection, and after one infection, the body will gain lasting immunity. Therefore, it is usually not possible to get it a second time. However, the chickenpox virus may remain latent in the ganglia after cure and may reoccur at some point in the future if the immune system is weakened, leading to a second bout of chickenpox or shingles. Chickenpox is highly contagious and, if diagnosed, should be treated in isolation and further consultation with a hospital infectious disease unit is recommended.
