National statistics from 1998 show that there are 5.4 million people with double vision, and about 16.2 million people with monocular blindness, binocular low vision and monocular low vision —-21.6 million people in China. The top 3 causes of blindness are cataract, corneal opacification and primary glaucoma. It can be seen that primary glaucoma is the main blinding eye disease in China. The blindness caused by primary glaucoma is characterized by incurable blindness, and a significant proportion of blind people are young adults, which cannot be ignored. Not only do blind people lose the opportunity to create wealth for society, they also significantly increase the burden on society and their families, and the emotional and other costs to a family caused by blindness are difficult to quantify. Glaucoma is also dangerous because some patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and primary closed-angle glaucoma do not have any conscious symptoms after the onset of the disease and are unaware of its progress, so they cannot receive early and effective treatment and eventually become blind. According to a sample survey in Beijing, nearly 90% of chronic glaucoma patients in Beijing are unaware of their condition, so it is no wonder that glaucoma is likened to a “latent killer” of vision. For this reason, it is important to spread the knowledge of glaucoma among the general public. In addition, it is recommended that people over the age of 40 should have regular eye examinations at regular hospitals, not only for visual acuity, but also for fundus, anterior chamber depth and neuro-optic papillae. For patients with glaucoma who have undergone anti-glaucoma surgery or are on medication, regular follow-up of changes in the visual field, fundus and optic nerve fiber layer is needed to evaluate whether the IOP level continues to cause damage to the optic nerve at that time and to adjust the medication at any time, rather than “all is well” after surgery. Although primary glaucoma cannot be prevented because the pathogenesis is unknown, early detection and proper treatment can prevent blindness in patients with glaucoma.
