What to do if you can’t lie down to sleep with advanced lung cancer

If patients with advanced stage of lung cancer cannot sleep lying down, they can adopt semi-recumbent or sitting style, and consult the doctor for symptomatic treatment if necessary.

Most of the reasons why patients with advanced cancer cannot lie down to sleep are that the tumor is relatively large in advanced cancer, and if they lie down to sleep, the tumor may compress the trachea and bronchial tubes, which may cause the symptom of respiratory difficulty. There may also be pleural metastasis, which produces a large amount of pleural fluid and compresses the lung tissues so that the patient cannot lie down.

The patient may be allowed to sleep in a semi-recumbent position, with the head of the patient’s bed elevated, which may improve the patient’s symptoms of stridor. Patients can also be made to sleep in sitting position. Patients with advanced stage of lung cancer have great difficulty in breathing in the lungs and have obstacles in ventilation, so they can choose to cushion the back of the patient high, and the breathing will become smooth after cushioning. Meanwhile, nasal tube oxygen or mask oxygen can be given to the patient to relieve the symptoms of respiratory difficulty.

If necessary, the patient can consult a doctor to improve the examination, and if a large amount of pleural fluid leads to compression symptoms, chest puncture can be performed to drain the pleural fluid under the advice of a professional doctor to relieve the symptom of breath-holding.

Patients with advanced stage of lung cancer have relative difficulty in breathing and cannot lie down to sleep, if necessary, symptomatic treatment can be carried out under the guidance of doctors to reduce pain and improve quality of life.
