Uric acid is measured by blood tests. The determination of blood uric acid requires taking a fasting serum specimen and measuring it with uric acid kinase. The normal value lies in the range of 150-380 μmol/L. If this normal range is exceeded or if it fluctuates widely, repeated monitoring is needed to determine the condition. For uric acid measurement, five days of purine food restriction and a daily uric acid excretion of more than 3.57 mmol/L is considered too much uric acid. Increased uric acid is mostly seen in patients with hyperuricemia and gout and requires prompt oral medication, such as allopurin tablets, which are commonly used to control serum uric acid. Patients should also pay special attention to their diet, not to eat high purine foods, such as seafood, and to eat less meat, eat more fruits and vegetables, drink more water, adhere to physical exercise, and control weight.
