After the diagnosis of lumbar disc herniation, the patient will show mainly symptoms of lumbar pain, there may be localized percussion pain, the muscles on both sides of the lumbar region will show significant tension, and the compression of the spinal nerve roots will result in numbness, weakness and distension of one or both lower limbs. If the patient is relatively young, and it is the first attack, and the compression is not particularly severe, conservative treatment is preferred. There are many conservative treatment methods. The medical need for strict bed rest during the acute phase is that the patient needs to lie flat and on his or her side for 1 day while in bed, and spend most of his or her time in bed except for eating and going to the toilet. Laying flat can reduce the pressure on the lumbar disc, and at the same time can make the nerves rest and recover, which can make the patient’s symptoms relieved. Patients with lumbar disc herniation often have conservative treatment efficiency of up to 70%-80%, which means that less than 20% of patients eventually need surgery. Therefore, bed rest is an important method for early conservative treatment of lumbar disc herniation.
