Dampness can be treated with medication and acupuncture, with medication being the mainstay. For example, according to the type of dampness, it can be categorized into cold-dampness trapped in the spleen, dampness-heat obstruction (the gathering of dampness and heat to form stagnation), spleen deficiency and dampness, and so on, and can be treated by taking Radix Rehmanniae Pill, Qingzhong Tang, and Ginseng-Ling-Baijutsu-San, and so on. 1. Pharmacological treatment: The main manifestations of cold and dampness trapped in the spleen are plumpness in the epigastrium (abdomen), dullness (lack of appetite, reduced food intake), low food intake, drowsiness in the limbs, loose stools, pale and fat tongue, white and greasy moss, etc., which can be treated by taking Radix Rehmanniae Pill in order to warm up the middle and dissipate the cold (to dispel the cold by warming up the medicine of the spleen and the stomach). The main manifestations of damp-heat obstruction include abdominal pain and diarrhea, dry mouth and bitterness, dullness and nausea, yellow urine, red tongue and yellowish greasy moss, etc. Qingzhong Tang can be taken to clear away damp-heat. The main manifestations of spleen deficiency and dampness include fullness in the epigastrium and abdomen, nausea and vomiting, fatigue (mental exhaustion and physical weakness), thick and greasy tongue and slow pulse, etc. Ginseng Ling Bai Zhu San can be taken to strengthen the spleen and dispel dampness (to make the dampness discharged by replenishing the spleen). 2. Acupuncture and moxibustion: Dampness is mainly caused by a deficiency of the spleen, which leads to problems in the transportation of fluids. Therefore, acupuncture or moxibustion can be used to regulate the spleen and stomach and dispel dampness by using acupuncture or moxibustion on the acupoints of the foot-san-li, spleen, stomach, water, feng-long, and yin-ling-quan, etc. It is recommended that a Chinese medicine practitioner identify the symptoms of dampness under the supervision of a Chinese medicine practitioner. It is recommended that treatment be carried out under the diagnosis of a Chinese medicine practitioner, and it is important not to carry out operations such as acupuncture, cupping or take tonics on one’s own.
