What is geriatric leukemia? In medicine, patients are generally classified by their age (which may vary from region to region and country to country), and usually people refer to leukemia patients who are over the age of 60 as elderly leukemia. In the current medical community, the treatment of elderly leukemia patients is often affected by factors such as old age, many underlying diseases, and poor lifestyle habits (smoking, alcohol consumption, etc.), and there is no unified standard protocol in modern medicine, and various protocols are not standardized due to their serious adverse effects (including infection, bleeding, impairment of internal organ function, etc.), thus reducing the therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, currently, within the Western medical community, the treatment of elderly leukemia patients, depending on the treatment wishes of their patients and families, generally includes conservative treatment (symptomatic administration of blood transfusion, anti-infection, etc.), reduced-dose chemotherapy (or low-dose chemotherapy) and clinical trial treatment (new drugs, targeted drugs, epigenetic therapy, etc.), with reduced-dose chemotherapy being the most common clinical treatment. The emergence and application of new drugs and new therapeutic methods are the current hotspots of research, but their clinical application has not been promoted due to the shortcomings such as high economic cost, unclear side effects and inaccurate efficacy. Therefore, based on this background and foundation, a comprehensive treatment based on TCM (referred to as TCM comprehensive treatment) has obvious advantages in treating elderly leukemia. Recently, two elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia were admitted to our department. One of them was repeatedly hospitalized in a western hospital and given symptomatic treatment such as blood transfusion for a long time, but the amount of blood transfusion and the number of transfusion gradually increased, and the clinical bleeding and other conditions could not be controlled, and was transferred to our hospital and clearly diagnosed as acute myeloid leukemia after standardized examination (bone marrow cell morphology, immunophenotyping, genetics, fusion gene, etc.), and given TCM comprehensive treatment, namely arsenic preparations (arsenic, stannous, etc.). After treatment, the patient’s clinical symptoms were stabilized, blood transfusion was reduced, and no adverse reactions were observed. After discharge from the hospital, the patient insisted on taking oral Chinese medicine, mainly to strengthen the Chinese medicine treatment of supporting the righteousness (strengthening the spleen and tonifying the kidneys), supplemented by anti-cancer (detoxification, activating blood circulation and resolving phlegm), which consolidated the treatment efficacy and significantly improved the quality of life and home time. The patient laughingly said that the scheduled hospitalization was a “cheer” for returning to the hospital. This shows that the comprehensive TCM treatment shortens the hospitalization time of patients, increases the time of reunion at home, reduces the dependence on blood transfusion, improves the quality of life of patients, extends the life span of patients, and effectively reduces the financial burden of patients’ families. The emergence of new biological therapies (cellular therapy) also brings a boon to elderly leukemia patients and their families because of their low adverse effects. The combination of TCM treatment with the new biologic therapy may be one of the options that meet the immediate interests of elderly leukemia patients.
