The age at which asthma disappears in children is difficult to predict and is highly variable, with a family history of asthma or their own allergies that may carry over into adulthood.
Asthma can occur at any age, with 30% of children experiencing symptoms by age 1, and 80% to 90% of children with asthma experiencing their first symptoms by age 4 to 5. Approximately 60% to 70% of children who develop asthma early in life will not experience symptoms again as adolescents or adults, with most having mild to moderate asthma, and a small number of severe asthma attacks occurring year-round.
Overall about 2/3 of children with asthma have their symptoms disappear by adulthood, but about 40% to 50% of children with apparent remission of asthma will have symptoms again in early adulthood.
It is recommended that childhood asthma must be treated aggressively with standardized medication so that it can be well controlled.
