The most common clinical condition for hard bumps on the top of the head that look like bone-like projections is benign tumors of the body surface, including sebaceous cysts or subcutaneous lipomas. Generally, the incidence of sebaceous cysts is more than that of lipomas, and further ultrasound examination is usually needed to make a clear diagnosis because sebaceous cysts may have bacterial infection, which manifests as redness, swelling, heat, pain, or even pus-like changes, while lipomas do not usually have bacterial infection. After ultrasound examination to make a clear diagnosis, either sebaceous cysts or lipomas usually need to be removed from the scalp, and local anesthesia is used to remove the mass completely. If the mass is too large, a pressure bandage will be applied to stop bleeding after suturing. Sebaceous cysts or lipomas can be cured by surgical removal.
