Gastroscopy is still recommended even if the barium meal is fine. Gastroscopy can visualize the morphology of the gastric mucosa and is a more reliable means of detecting gastric diseases.
Barium meal is a kind of examination means to indirectly observe the morphology of gastrointestinal mucosa under X-ray irradiation by contrast medium, which can dynamically observe and evaluate the function of gastrointestinal tract. However, barium meal is generally not suitable for patients with severe organ insufficiency or iodine allergy. Patients with gastrointestinal perforation and intestinal obstruction are also contraindicated for barium meal test.
Gastroscopy is a direct access to the digestive tract through the electronic gastroscope, the naked eye can directly observe the morphology of the gastroduodenal mucosa, it is easier to find mucosal lesions, and after the discovery of mucosal lesions can be directly clamped specimens for pathologic examination. However, gastroscopy is not recommended for patients with severe heart disease and lung disease.
Since the focus of barium meal and gastroscopy is different, barium meal has poorer sensitivity to the diagnosis of small gastric mucosal lesions. Therefore, a normal barium meal does not mean that there is no lesion in the gastric mucosa, and gastroscopy is still recommended.
