A shadow on the liver may indicate a space-occupying lesion in the liver, which can be either benign or malignant. Benign lesions such as liver cysts, hepatic hemangiomas, focal hyperplasia, heterogeneous fatty liver, hepatic adenomas, etc. are more common, while malignant occupying lesions mainly refer to hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocellular carcinoma and liver metastases. Therefore, if there is a shadow on the liver, further relevant examination is needed to clarify the diagnosis. Enhanced CT or MRI of the abdomen can be performed to help clarify the diagnosis. Sometimes tumor markers, such as alpha-fetoprotein, CA199, and abnormal prothrombin, are also used to help make a comprehensive diagnosis. Don’t be worried if the abdominal ultrasound reveals a shadow on the liver, further examination is needed to clarify the diagnosis.
