Fundus screening for infants is necessary, but the prerequisite is not that all infants need to be screened, but that they meet certain screening criteria. This is because the chance of developing fundus retinopathy of prematurity is found to be around 60% in infants with a birth weight of <1500g at less than 34 weeks of gestation and a history of oxygenation after birth. If the gestation period is shorter or the birth weight is lower, the incidence can reach 66%-82%, which is the main eye disease causing blindness in children. Therefore, nowadays, for preterm and low birth weight infants with birth weight <2000g, or birth gestation week <32 weeks, fundus lesion screening should be performed to detect fundus lesions early and then give appropriate treatment. If treatment is not available, they should be referred quickly to an institution that is equipped to screen and treat them, and be followed up and treated by an ophthalmologist with sufficient experience and relevant knowledge.
