What is a hernia?

We Chinese are full of wisdom, and Chinese characters are a good example of Chinese wisdom. For example, the Chinese character for “hernia” has a “mountain” under the character for “disease”, which means a disease like a mountain. Of course, we also know that this “mountain” often disappears after lying flat and reappears after standing up, so we can guess that the root of the disease is not the “mountain”, but the “mountain” that comes in and out at will. The “hole” that allows the “mountain” to go in and out at will! The most common hernia we see is the inguinal hernia in the inguinal region and the femoral hernia slightly below, and we often see hernias protruding from the belly button. In addition, some people who are unfortunately ill and undergo abdominal surgery may have incisional hernias of different sizes bulging out of the incision if the incision is not healing well due to various factors such as weakness, coughing or suturing. All of these hernias are collectively referred to as extra-abdominal hernias. Of course, extra-abdominal hernias are not the only ones. Hernias can occur in any weak or defective area, such as white line hernia, lumbar hernia, parastomal hernia, and so on, to name a few. So how does a hernia form? In the case of an extra-abdominal hernia it is mainly related to two factors: the strength of the abdominal wall and the intra-abdominal pressure. Our abdominal wall can be compared to a bucket or a sack full of intestines, and people often develop a hernia because the abdominal wall is locally weak, congenitally or acquired, or even defective; or because of the presence of high abdominal pressure, such as old cough, constipation, or long-term heavy work. Abdominal pressure and abdominal wall strength is like a spear and shield, healthy people spear is not sharp and the shield is strong enough, intestines have no hole to drill; if it does not happen that the spear is too sharp and the shield is not strong, intestines will take advantage of the opportunity to flow, rampant in and out. If the intestine is tolerated, the defect of the abdominal wall will gradually increase under the action of the intestine repeatedly going in and out and abdominal pressure, and the hernia will be as big as a ball, making it difficult to move and painful; some patients may also have a dangerous situation where the intestine is suddenly stuck and cannot be returned, which is in accordance with the old saying: “If the small hole is not mended, the big hole will suffer”, and not only the small intestine will be angry (small intestine gas), but also the life will be at risk. Life is also involved in the risk. Belly is not old clothes, in case of torn, the Chinese people will never throw away the feelings. As a physical defect, the only way to treat an adult ventral hernia is surgery, and medication or qigong will not work. The traditional method is to close the hole by pulling together the tissues on both sides of the hernia defect with a thick thread, but the tissues on both sides of the rupture are difficult to pull together because the pelvis cannot shrink even a little, just like the hole in the skin that is stretched over the drum surface, and the missing piece is pulled up hard, and it may be stretched apart before the season changes. Modern science has long had high-tech repair mesh, that is like using a new cloth larger than the hole on the surface of the broken clothes, firmly sewn up around, we should be able to look forward to the broken mirror round.
