Excessive dandruff cannot be simply identified as kidney deficiency. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, some of the excess dandruff is indeed related to kidney deficiency, but not all excess dandruff belongs to kidney deficiency. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, there are mainly blood deficiency and wind dryness type, or blood heat and wind dryness as well as blood heat fumigation, or damp heat fumigation type, and generally more dandruff belongs to the damp heat type, which means it belongs to the actual evidence, not the deficiency evidence. Therefore, this aspect needs to be treated separately. For dandruff that mostly belongs to the kidney deficiency type, it can be treated appropriately with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan or Zuo Gui Wan; however, if it belongs to the damp-heat fumigation type, then it should be treated with Gentian Diarrhea Liver Pill or Gentian Diarrhea Liver Tang plus reduction.
