Oncology patients often have a drop in white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells when their blood is checked after chemotherapy, and we often hear that this is due to the development of myelosuppression. What exactly does myelosuppression mean? Myelosuppression is a decrease in the activity of blood cell precursors in the bone marrow, which is commonly referred to as a decrease in white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. So why does myelosuppression occur? This is because malignant cells are distinguished from normal cells mainly by their abnormal proliferation ability, and chemotherapy drugs are initially designed to kill cells that proliferate rapidly. In contrast, bone marrow cells proliferate faster compared to other normal cells, so chemotherapy often causes abnormal blood picture after chemotherapy. In addition to the causes of myelosuppression, oncologists should also clarify other basic questions about tumor suppression: for example, what drugs can cause myelosuppression? How long does it occur? What is the degree of myelosuppression? How long does it last? In order to tell the patient when to review the routine blood test, it is important to be prepared in advance to avoid adverse consequences. After knowing the basic mechanism of myelosuppression, let’s talk about how to treat it, because white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells have their own characteristics, so we cannot generalize the treatment. With regard to raising leukocytes, it is necessary to first clarify the characteristics of leukocytes: they are related to yang energy. The life span of leukocytes is a few hours, which is easy to recover, so they are Yang compared to platelets and red blood cells; the cycle changes, leukocytes are high at two or three in the afternoon, which is related to Yang Qi. This corresponds to the change of Yang energy in the middle of the day; symptoms, patients with low white blood cells will appear to be cold, which is also consistent with Yang deficiency; and the increase in white blood cells after infection is often treated with heat-clearing and detoxifying drugs, which are mostly bitter and cold products that hurt Yang. In summary, leukocytes are related to Yang Qi, especially Wei Yang, so raising leukocytes means replenishing Yang Qi and Wei Yang. Where does yang energy come from? Now there are two ways to say it, one is from the lower jiao, and the other is from the vital gate. The Nei Jing talks about most of it coming from the lower jiao, and from the lower jiao it reaches the whole body through the lungs, so the lower jiao should be tonified. The moxa leaf is pungent and warm, pungent can move and disperse, and warm can raise Yang, so moxibustion is very effective for raising white. So, which acupuncture points are used to raise the white blood cells? Guan Yuan is the place where the vital energy is shut off and hidden, so moxibustion can enrich the vital energy. It is also located on the Ren Chakra, which is the sea of Yin Chakra, so moxibustion can also nourish Yin and seek Yang from Yin. The body mainly relies on the small intestine to absorb nutrients, so Guan Yuan is a very important point for raising Bai. The second important point is Qihai, which is the place where Qi gathers and resides, so replenishing Qihai can replenish lung Qi, and when lung Qi is sufficient, the propagation of lung will be enhanced, thus enabling Yang Qi to spread throughout the body. Adding Foot San Li and Zhong Gui can replenish the Qi of the Later Heaven. In addition, warming yang herbs such as sliced sambong, cinnamon, dried ginger, astragalus, angelica, and bing slices, finely ground and applied to the umbilicus, are also very effective in raising white. I mainly use the treatment method of harmonizing the liver and spleen to achieve the purpose of raising platelets. Platelets have blood clotting function, and Chinese medicine theory and blood clotting related organs is the liver and spleen, the liver collects blood, the spleen to regulate blood, so harmonize the liver and spleen can raise platelets. How to harmonize the liver and spleen? First, cupping can be done on the back by selecting the Liver Yu, Spleen Yu and Diaphragm Yu. Secondly, Chinese herbal medicine can be used to nourish the blood, tonify the qi and cool the blood, tonify the qi and blood to regulate the liver and spleen, and cool the blood to prevent bleeding. The last is hemoglobin, also called hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. The main role of red blood cells is to carry oxygen and the oxygen carried is replaced through the lungs, so red blood cells are closely related to the lungs. Chinese medicine believes that lung energy does not generate itself, but depends on the spleen to transform it, and cultivating earth (spleen) to generate gold (lung) means this. The red blood cells have a long life span, so it takes a long time for the disease to hurt, and a long time for the disease to affect the kidneys, and modern medicine believes that the adrenal glands have erythropoietin, so raising the hematocrit depends on nourishing the spleen and nourishing the kidneys. Therefore, it is necessary to nourish the spleen and kidney to nourish the lung qi, and only when the lung qi is restored can the hematocrit come up. The division of labor between platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells is very clear, as Chinese medicine says, Wei travels outside the veins, Ying travels inside the veins. Look at the blood inside the blood vessels, white blood cells are on the outside, relatively hot, more active, can roam around, is the guard, to protect platelets and red blood cells, while ensuring oxygen delivery throughout the body; platelets, advise the emperor, to supervise his work, not to let him slacken, is the minister, performance to prevent his red blood cells aggregation and clotting; and red blood cells as the king of a country, carrying oxygen to nourish the whole body, that is, the so-called “royal grace”. Each of the three has its own role and use, coordinating their work, thus ensuring the normal activities of blood.
