Patients with trigeminal neuralgia are advised not to drink alcohol, as it can stimulate the nerves and dilate the blood vessels, which can cause increased pain. Trigeminal neuralgia is caused by the compression of small ectopic blood vessels in the root of the trigeminal nerve, the trigeminal nerve out of the brainstem, in the cranium, with the pulsation of the blood vessels will stimulate the nerve, which leads to changes in the demyelination of the nerve, resulting in increased excitability of nerve conduction and short circuiting of the conduction pathway, thus causing pain. The metabolites of alcohol will stimulate the nerves after drinking, which will lead to increased excitability of the nerves and increase the pain. In addition, alcohol can cause vasodilation of blood vessels, leading to increased vascular pulsation, resulting in significant vascular compression of the nerve, which can lead to increased pain. Therefore, patients with trigeminal neuralgia should avoid drinking alcohol and eating spicy and stimulating foods such as ginger and chili peppers, and forbid smoking and drinking strong tea to avoid increasing nerve excitability.
