How often are intramedullary nails removed

Intramedullary nails generally take at least one year to remove, but the exact time varies from person to person and is usually removed only after imaging if it suggests healing of the fracture. Intramedullary nailing is a commonly used internal fixator in orthopedic surgery and is generally used to treat fractures of the extremities. Removal of the internal fixation is usually considered when the remodeling and shaping of the bone has been completed. Since fracture healing is usually divided into three processes, namely, hematoma inflammation and mechanization period, primary scab formation period, and scab remodeling and shaping period, and the scab remodeling and shaping period takes about 1~2 years, at least one year is needed to remove the intramedullary nails. After the operation, we should work with doctors and rehabilitation therapists to formulate a personalized functional exercise program, so as to strive for early, scientific and reasonable rehabilitation training, in order to promote the blood circulation of the limb, promote the recovery of fracture, and prevent the disuse syndrome and so on. After intramedullary nail internal fixation, patients should have regular follow-ups and insist on functional exercises, and should consult the doctor in time if there is any discomfort during the period.
