Iron supplementation may cause acute and chronic iron poisoning. 1. Acute iron poisoning: most commonly seen in the accidental ingestion of ferrous sulfate, ferric ammonium citrate, etc.; intravenous injection of too much iron. Within 6 hours of taking large doses of iron, patients may experience nausea, vomiting, coffee-colored vomit, etc., accompanied by abdominal pain, tarry stools, pallor, tachycardia and so on. The condition often improves within 6 to 24 hours of accidental administration, but jaundice and shock may occur after several hours to ten hours. But there are also some patients who have vomiting blood, blood in stool, self-sensation, shock, etc. within 4~40 hours of misuse, and it may even cause liver and kidney failure. 2. Chronic iron poisoning: it is mostly seen in the long-term overuse of iron supplements; the existence of iron metabolism abnormalities and other diseases. The skin of the exposed parts of the patient’s body surface, armpit, groin and other parts of the skin, will be blue, brown, gray, and will be accompanied by cirrhosis of the liver, spider nevus, elevated blood glucose, decreased libido, impotence and other phenomena. Iron poisoning is generally not self-healing, if the patient has the above symptoms, it is recommended to go to the hospital in a timely manner, in accordance with the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment.
