Severe deafness without residual hearing may not be able to wear hearing aids. A trial fitting can be done first, and if hearing aids are ineffective, only other hearing technologies such as cochlear implants are recommended to improve hearing.
Hearing loss is generally categorized as conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss. Severe deafness generally refers to sensorineural hearing loss with a hearing of 90 decibels or more. If the duration of the disease is short and sudden deafness is considered, it is recommended to go to the hospital and try medications such as hormones and neurotrophic treatments first.
For cases where medication is not effective, hearing aids can be tried and tested. Because the principle of hearing aid is to amplify the sound so that the patient can perceive the sound, if the patient’s residual hearing is poor or even no residual hearing, even if the sound amplification is louder, it will not be able to perceive the sound signal. Only other hearing technologies such as cochlear implants are recommended to improve hearing.
