Does brown urine mean kidney failure?

Brown urine is not necessarily kidney failure. Brown urine usually represents hematuria or hemoglobinuria as well as myoglobinuria, which may be related to physiological reasons, acute cystitis, liver and gallbladder diseases, or caused by kidney diseases.
1. Physiological reasons: it may be due to the patient to hold urine for a long time, drink less water, etc., when the urine is extremely concentrated, it can appear brown urine; or when strenuous exercise may cause hematuria, usually after resting, it can return to normal.
2. Acute cystitis: mostly by pathogens upstream into the bladder, causing extensive inflammation of the bladder, there may be a small amount of bleeding, mixed with urine discharge, can be manifested as urine is brown or soy sauce color. Usually accompanied by frequent urination, urinary urgency and other symptoms.
3. Hepatobiliary diseases: obstructive jaundice is caused by diseases of the liver or gallbladder, such as when bile duct stones, biliary roundworms and so on. The increase of bilirubin in the urine may cause the urine to be brown or dark yellow, accompanied by yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes all over the body.
4. Kidney disease: chronic glomerulonephritis can appear brown urine; acute renal failure caused by rhabdomyolysis, may appear brown or soy sauce color urine.
Brown urine can also be seen in other causes, if there is brown urine with other discomforts, it is recommended to consult a doctor in a timely manner to clarify the cause and standardize the treatment.
