Generally, the ultrasound characteristics of corpus luteum cysts are visible as a well-defined cystic mass on one side of the ovary.
The corpus luteum is a cystic cavity-like structure formed after ovulation, which has the function of secreting progesterone. If abnormal fluid collects in the corpus luteum during ovulation, a corpus luteum cyst may be formed, which is a kind of physiologic cyst.
During ultrasonography, a well-defined cystic mass can be found on one side of the ovary. If a luteal cyst ruptures and causes hemorrhage, ultrasonography can reveal a dark area of fluid in the pelvic cavity.
Most luteal cysts resolve on their own and do not require special treatment if they are asymptomatic, but in some cases they may rupture or torsion and present with acute abdominal pain, which should be treated as soon as possible.
If you suspect luteal cysts, you should go to a regular hospital for examination, and if there are some uncomfortable symptoms, it is recommended to actively seek medical treatment.
