There are no statins with minimal side effects. The commonly used statins are simvastatin, fluvastatin, atorvastatin, and rasulvastatin. The main side effect of these statins is that they can cause an increase in muscle enzymes, which in severe cases can cause myalgia. There are two types of statins in common use, one is water-soluble and the other is fat-soluble water-soluble. Statins have relatively less effect on muscle strength and cause relatively less myalgia. Rosuvastatin is a water-soluble statin, which has less effect on muscles. If you take atorvastatin and simvastatin and have symptoms of myalgia, you can switch to Rosuvastatin. If you really can’t tolerate statins, you can use PCSK9 inhibitors, which have relatively few side effects, but are more expensive, with one drug costing around$2,300 and requiring two shots per month.
