More than five years after stomach cancer surgery does not necessarily mean that you are fine, there is still a possibility of recurrence.
Gastric cancer refers to the cancer that occurs in the stomach, usually originates from gastric epithelial cells, and is the most common malignant tumor in the digestive tract. Patients can choose appropriate surgical program for treatment.
The prognosis of gastric cancer is affected by various factors such as individual patient’s condition, tumor stage, and therapeutic intervention. The five-year survival rate after surgery for stage I gastric cancer reaches 90%, stage II gastric cancer has 70%, stage III gastric cancer is 25%~50%, and stage IV gastric cancer is less than 10%.
During the period of more than five years after surgery, patients can have a better prognosis if they follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment and do a good job in life care, such as diet, rest, exercise and so on. However, if the stomach cancer develops into middle or late stage, or if the bad habits before stomach cancer, such as smoking and alcohol abuse, still exist, there is still a possibility of recurrence.
