What are the after-effects of cementing?

Bone cementing generally refers to cement injection vertebroplasty after vertebral compression fracture, and its sequelae include spinal cord and nerve injury caused by leakage of bone cement, secondary osteoporotic fracture, residual pain, and displacement of bone cement, and so on.
1. Spinal cord and nerve injury caused by leakage of bone cement: the bone cement leaks from the vertebral body and flows into the intervertebral foramen or vertebral canal, which causes damage to the spinal cord and nerve roots, and numbness of the lower limbs, pain, limited activities or even paralysis can occur.
2. Osteoporotic fracture: after vertebral body shaping, due to the biomechanical strength of the cement is different from other vertebrae, in daily activities, due to the uneven force on the vertebrae, it can lead to osteoporotic fracture of the neighboring vertebrae of the patient.
3. Residual pain: some patients have lumbar muscle pain due to spinal sagittal balance problems caused by multiple vertebral fractures. Even after injection of bone cement, sometimes patients’ symptoms are not relieved obviously, and they still have residual back pain symptoms, but the nature of the pain is different.
It should be noted that the incidence of after-effects of routine operation is not high, and patients are recommended to have regular review after bone cementing and follow the doctor’s instructions.
