Laryngoscopy is not usually necessary for the diagnosis of chronic pharyngitis, but it is sometimes needed to rule out other diseases that present with similar symptoms. It belongs to chronic inflammatory lesion of pharynx, often caused by repeated attacks of acute pharyngitis, stimulation of adverse physical and chemical factors, etc. It can be divided into chronic simple pharyngitis, chronic hypertrophic pharyngitis, dry pharyngitis, atrophic pharyngitis and other types, and the patients often have symptoms of dry pharynx, itchy pharynx, coughing, and sensation of foreign body in the pharynx and so on. Symptoms of hypopharyngeal cancer, tonsil cancer, laryngeal cancer and esophageal cancer are sometimes similar to those of chronic pharyngitis and are not easy to distinguish. In order to clarify the nature of specific diseases, laryngoscopy is needed to make necessary judgment on the condition of pharynx to avoid misdiagnosis and omission of diagnosis.
