How to use the neck collar wisely?

  (1)The indications for the use of neck collar are neurogenic, vertebral artery and cervical-shoulder cervical spondylosis; while spinal, sympathetic or mixed cervical spondylosis is not suitable, as there is no obvious effect.  (2) The neck collar is usually worn during the day and lifted at night when resting.  (3) No matter what type of cervical spondylosis, where wearing the neck collar does not improve the symptoms, or anti-discomfort or reaction, the neck collar should be taken off, no need to force.  (4) The neck collar should be personalized according to the length and thickness of the patient’s neck, so that it can be worn for the purpose of comfort, fit and effectiveness.  (5) During the use of neck collar, it is necessary to maintain the right amount of functional exercises for the neck and shoulder, such as neck rotation and shoulder joint abduction, etc., supplemented with neck and shoulder massage and physical therapy when necessary, in order to improve the local.  This can improve the blood circulation and metabolism of the neck and shoulder joints and maintain the normal mobility of the neck and shoulder joints. After the symptoms are reduced to a certain degree, the neck collar should be lifted in time and the strength of the neck and shoulder muscles and joints should be further increased to restore the function of the neck and shoulder to a normal level as soon as possible.  (6) The use of neck collar should be in accordance with the doctor’s prescription, generally used continuously for l~3 months. It is not advisable to apply the neck collar for a long time, otherwise it will make the neck muscles dependent, resulting in stiffness and atrophy of the neck and back muscles due to disuse or less use, adhesion or calcification of ligaments, and limitation of the independent activities of the neck. At this point, the neck collar still worn is not beneficial, but harmful.  (7) For patients who have done anterior cervical disc removal plus intervertebral bone grafting, it is not advisable to use soft neck collar protection, but to apply plaster collar fixation, because the latter is firm, solid, strong support and enclosure, which is conducive to neck stability and consolidation of surgical effect. Patients with severe cervical spondylosis should not be satisfied with neck collar protection, but should be hospitalized as early as possible.  For patients with cervical spondylosis, the principles of using neck collar are: follow the doctor’s prescription; reasonable use; timely release.
