Due to the great advances in modern surgical techniques, thyroid surgery, including total thyroidectomy plus cervical lymph node dissection due to thyroid cancer, cannot be considered major surgery from the point of view of the degree of damage to the body. However, standard thyroid surgery, even the most basic thyroid lobectomy, is considered to be a delicate procedure. Because the thyroid gland is adjacent to the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves, which govern the voice, and the parathyroid glands, which control the body’s calcium and phosphorus metabolism, these are very delicate organ structures that are easily damaged. Therefore, in order to ensure both thoroughness and minimize the incidence of surgical complications, the surgery is best left to a trained thyroid surgeon. Generally, depending on the type of surgery, patients are discharged from the hospital two to four days after undergoing thyroid surgery.
