Sha Jiang, also known as Kaempferia galanga, has no apparent harm when taken in the correct dosage and within the indications. Kaempferia is a Chinese medicine name, its flavor is pungent, warm, with the effect of moving qi and warming the middle (to promote the flow of qi while warming the spleen and stomach), in addition to the effect of eliminating food, pain relief. Kaempferia galanga is useful for vomiting blood caused by cold and dampness, and is also effective for chest and diaphragm distension, as well as for treating cold pain in the epigastric region (the stomach and abdomen feel cold and painful) and food stagnation. The hazards of Kaempferia galanga are unclear and its safety has not been verified by evidence-based medicine. The adverse effects and contraindications of Kaempferia galanga are not yet clear; caution should be exercised in patients with yin deficiency and blood deficiency (deficiency of yin fluid and blood), and it should not be used in people with gastric fire (fire generated by poor operation of gastric qi).
