Mian Yin Chen has a bitter, pungent flavor and is slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder meridians. It can clear dampness-heat and relieve jaundice by inducing diuresis (clearing evil qi from the biliary tract and eliminating jaundice). It is used in treating jaundice with scanty urination, dampness-warmth (warmth caused by feeling dampness-heat), summer dampness, and itching of wet sores.
Yin Chen with Rhubarb makes the evils of dampness and heat come out from urine and feces at the same time, and the power of clearing heat is strengthened. It is suitable for jaundice at the beginning of jaundice, where heat is more important than dampness; Yin Chen with Ze Xie has the function of promoting dampness and eliminating jaundice, and increasing the power of promoting water retention. It is suitable for jaundice caused by dampness-heat, where dampness is more important than heat and urination is unfavorable (unruly urination).
