In general, symptoms of pain in both cheeks are considered to be possibly due to bilateral parotitis. The parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands and is located in both cheeks near the earlobes. The parotid glands are enlarged, centered on the earlobes, either on one side or bilaterally. Because of immune, obstructive, infectious, and inflammatory enlargements of undetermined cause, parotitis is most commonly caused by infection, most often bacterial and viral. Viral parotitis is due to the virus entering the suppurative stage, squeezing the parotid gland to see the pus flow from the ducts. Bacterial parotitis is mainly manifested by fever, localized redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the parotid gland, and a rapid increase in the number of white blood cells.
