Exercise for knee pain in the elderly is important

As the saying goes, “the legs get old before the people get old”, and with the advent of an aging society, the number of patients with lower extremity weight-bearing joint pain is increasing, especially in the knee joint. Of course, as an orthopedic surgeon, knee pain patients are also the main group of people I see, and solving knee pain has become one of the main tasks of my clinical research. It is an old medical maxim that “three parts treatment, seven parts nourishment”. In my opinion, the “maintenance” of the knee joint can be summarized in two words, namely “exercise”. Therefore, in clinical practice, we often encounter these questions from the elderly: “Do I do taijiquan?” I think it can be summarized in two words, “exercise”, “can I do tai chi?”, “can I pedal a bicycle?” , “How about hiking?” What is the best way to do health exercises? “.         So, how should the knee joint be maintained, and how should knee pain patients exercise? What is “exercise”? This is a concept that older people with knee pain must understand and appreciate before exercising. In my opinion, exercise is moderate exercise in the right way. First, exercise should be done in the right way. For example, in clinical practice, I often encounter elderly patients with knee pain (knee osteoarthritis) who tell me, “How come the more I “exercise” my knee, the more it hurts? I would ask her, “How do you exercise?” She would often tell me, “I walk around the park three times a day. For a patient with knee osteoarthritis, it is imperative to reduce the weight-bearing activities of the knee joint, so how can you exercise by walking excessively? Second, exercise should be moderated. For example, for patients with patellofemoral arthritis, there is no doubt that non-weight-bearing exercises such as “empty pedal bicycle”, “quadriceps functional exercise” and “swimming” can be performed, but if excessive exercise However, if the exercise is excessive, not only will it not reduce the symptoms, on the contrary, some of them may induce synovitis and aggravate the disease. Again, ask the joint first about how to exercise. The anatomical structure of the knee joint is complex and the causes of pain are many, so the patient with pain should not choose what kind of exercise and what kind of degree to master, but rather the patient’s condition. Therefore, it is important to see a specialist and understand your condition as a prerequisite for exercise for every elderly patient with knee pain.
