Earth bitter gall is mainly used to treat sore throat, mumps and other conditions.

Literature records that the bitter gall can be used to treat mumps by grinding vinegar and applying it to the affected area; it can be used for children’s diarrhea by slicing or powdering and swallowing; it can be used to treat diphtheria and sore throat by blowing it into the affected area with borax and ice chips, etc.; and it can be used to treat furuncles by applying it to the affected area with the powdered bitter gold basin and mixing it with vinegar.
