Normal liver function does not mean the absence of hepatitis B. When infected with the hepatitis B virus, liver function can be completely normal, even to the point of cirrhosis, and liver function can appear normal, indicating only the absence of active inflammation of the liver. If liver function is abnormal, it does not indicate that it is caused by hepatitis B, because abnormal liver function can also be caused by other factors such as medications, hepatitis C, hepatitis A, or alcohol. Abnormal liver function only indicates the presence of a cause for the abnormal liver function, which may be hepatitis B. This may prompt further testing to determine whether hepatitis B is present. But with normal liver function, this indication does not exist. To determine whether you have hepatitis B, you should still have your hepatitis B five tests.
