Common misunderstandings of gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment

Myth] Stomach disease is the most common, it is a minor problem, just pay attention to the maintenance. Experts point out that 80% of early gastric cancer has no symptoms, and the few that have symptoms are atypical symptoms, which are easily confused with some gastric diseases such as gastritis and gastric ulcer. It is very easy to be confused with some gastric diseases such as gastritis and gastric ulcer. Without early diagnosis of gastric cancer, treatment is often delayed. Misconception】Gastroscopy is necessary but too painful. When patients with indigestion symptoms visit hospitals, doctors often ask them to undergo gastroscopy. Some patients are hesitant to undergo gastroscopy because they are afraid that it will be painful. In fact, as the quality of gastroscopy continues to improve (finer, softer, better maneuverability) and the operating physician becomes more skilled, more than half of patients undergo gastroscopy with only mild discomfort. Skilled physicians can usually complete a gastroscopy (including taking pictures and biopsies) within 3-5 minutes, and rarely exceed 10 minutes for complex patients. Therefore, most patients are able to tolerate it. The main discomfort is nausea and the feeling of not being able to exhale. For special patients, sedative drugs can be used to help eliminate the discomfort during the examination, and “painless” gastroscopy can be used. Misconception】Take exaggerated health care products as a panacea. In fact, stomach cancer is not one kind of disease but a large group of diseases. Only personalized and comprehensive treatment according to disease type and condition is the fundamental way of treatment. At present, many stomach cancer-related health care products with illegal propaganda and exaggerated efficacy are flooding the market, and some patients are convinced of them and buy them by thousands at any time. This not only causes economic loss, but also, more importantly, misleads the disease. In fact, there is a fundamental difference between health care products and drugs. Drugs have a strict audit mechanism and the scope of application and contraindication, while health supplements can be marketed as long as they are harmless to human body and do not have the therapeutic effect of drugs on specific diseases. Health care products cannot replace drugs. Misconception】Concealing the real condition of stomach cancer from patients is to make patients better cooperate with treatment. When patients are diagnosed with gastric cancer, their family members or friends often consider that they cannot accept the shock and keep it a secret. One of the most common measures is to avoid going to tumor specialty hospitals or seeking professional doctors for gastric cancer treatment, resulting in irregular treatment of gastric cancer; some young patients are found to be suspicious by their condition, family members and medical care, which increases their psychological burden. Therefore, oncologists advocate that within the patient’s psychological tolerance, appropriate ways should be taken to make the patient gradually understand the real condition and build up the confidence to overcome the disease. Myth] Cancer will not occur again after gastric ulcer has been removed. After most of the stomach has been removed, it is still possible to get gastric cancer, which is called residual gastric cancer in medical science. We should not take gastric cancer lightly just because the stomach has been removed. We should strive to do gastroscopy once a year within 5 years after benign gastric disease, and do not refuse to take biopsy for pathological examination.
