The Heimlich maneuver is a simple and effective first aid method for relieving airway foreign body obstruction in emergency situations. It is mainly used in emergencies when a foreign body enters the larynx or airway and cannot be expelled on its own, and there is a risk of choking. The Heimlich maneuver depends on the position of the patient. 1. If the patient whose throat is obstructed is in a standing or sitting position, the rescuer should stand behind the patient, place his/her hands in a crossed grip under the patient’s xiphoid process or at the position of 2~3 horizontal fingers above the navel, and then rapidly impact the upper abdomen inwardly and upwardly for 3-5 times, so as to make the diaphragm rise, and make use of the impact to make the obstructed foreign body in the airway to be discharged out of the airway. 2. If the patient falls to the ground and does not wake up because of foreign body suffocation, the rescuer should first place the patient in a supine position, with the head tilted to the side, and then ride across the middle of the patient’s two legs, place the root of one palm under the patient’s xiphoid process or in the position of 2~3 transverse fingers above the navel, and then place the other hand on the top of the first hand, and then rapidly impact the upper abdomen inwardly for 3-5 times, and then repeat the process until the obstructing substance is discharged. If the foreign body has been discharged but the patient is still unconscious, the patient’s consciousness should be determined immediately, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be given immediately if necessary. The patient’s airway is found to be obstructed by a foreign body should immediately call the emergency telephone, and at the same time give the Heimlich maneuver treatment, such as through the Heimlich method can not be discharged from the airway of the foreign body, the patient should be sent to the hospital as soon as possible, to seek professional medical help.
