It is not difficult to imagine that once a patient learns that he or she has cancer, he or she will often have many psychological and somatic reactions, among which there are positive factors, but the negative factors may be more, and directly affect early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment. Therefore, it is necessary for both patients and family members to understand these psychological reaction processes. 1.Nervousness and anxiety Nervousness and anxiety are the initial emotional responses of cancer patients. When a person is diagnosed with cancer, it is undoubtedly a blow to the head, and he or she feels panic, fear, tension and anxiety. In serious cases, one may feel restless and lose sleep and food. From the point of view of psychological defense mechanisms, this psychological process has both advantages and disadvantages. When one’s life is threatened or one feels physical pain, anxiety is supposed to be a good warning signal to react accordingly to the threat or pain one is facing. Chronic, severe anxiety, however. can cause a person’s endocrine function to become dysfunctional, which in turn disrupts his or her natural defense system. At this point, tension and anxiety no longer play a protective role in a person’s survival, but instead can become a medical condition, and of course, affect the treatment of cancer. 2. Denial and Recognition Many cancer patients, after learning that they have cancer, often use the psychological process of denial to cope with the sudden arrival of bad news. Denial is like a buffer, which can moderate the impact of bad news and make people suffer less, and at the same time, it can also make people’s mind and spirit calm down, so as to make good preparations for psychological and physical responses. If a cancer patient does not adopt the psychological process of denial, he or she will sometimes go to extremes and engage in undesirable negative behaviors once the shock is too much for him or her to bear. Denial benefits the patient, but it also often delays the disease. Because some patients insist on their denial, repeat many tests, so as to delay the early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment of the golden time. Only when the patient from the denial of the state of mind to get rid of, accept the established facts, so that family members and friends to share some of the feelings, will feel as if a thousand pounds of burden, and cooperate with the doctor to actively participate in a variety of treatments. Aggrieving and resentment are the intense emotional reactions of cancer patients after they have gone through a lot of denial struggles. At this time, the patient knows that his/her cancer diagnosis has been finalized and his/her misfortune has come. Think of their own age is still young, but has almost come to the end of life; think of their own many ideals have not yet been realized, many work to do; think of parents, wife and children still need their own care ……, how can not feel a lot of pain? Especially see other people alive and well working, carefree to enjoy the joy of family, while they are locked up in the ward, in addition to doing a variety of laboratory tests, but also endless injections, medication, etc., how can all this not feel aggrieved, jealousy, anger and resentment. It is no wonder that cancer patients will find everything unpleasant and will lose their temper involuntarily no matter how big or small the matter is. In this regard, on one hand, patients should pay attention to controlling their own emotions so as not to damage their own defense functions; on the other hand, medical staff and patients’ families should be more understanding of the patients. 4. Disappointment and Struggle When the patient fights with cancer for a period of time, or is tortured for a longer period of time, or has fluctuation of condition due to the lack of significant therapeutic effect, he/she often feels that the future is uncertain. Coupled with long-term illness, physical weakness, and the involvement of loved ones, many feelings of guilt, disappointment, depression, frustration and loneliness are inevitable. Many patients are also trapped in the situation of reminiscence: see living in the house for many years, think of their own hard work to build up the family; see the familiar desk and chair, equipment and tools, etc., filled with infinite nostalgia for the past life; loved ones seem to be full of tears, a hundred thoughtful and take care of themselves; colleagues seem to sympathize with and feel sorry for the mood to treat themselves. These plausible feelings and emotions are intertwined, making the patient sometimes summon up courage to fight against cancer, and sometimes struggle in despair. Despair and struggle are serious psychological reactions of cancer patients, therefore, it is urgent to lift this mindset. 5. Trouble of death and acceptance of death After some cancer patients have experienced the above psychological reactions, they will be troubled by death all the time. People have different attitudes towards death. Some people feel that they will leave this beautiful world from now on and will never see their loved ones again, and the tragic scenario of separation seems to be in front of their eyes: they are going to death alone, and their hearts are full of infinite despair, panic and sadness. Some think they have lost the battle of life and death, only to accept death, no longer struggle, no longer hold any hope, completely at the mercy of the facts in front of them. Some people accept the advice and comfort of doctors, friends and relatives, climb out of the abyss of despair and frustration, love their limited life again, no longer complaining, self-loathing, no longer afraid of death, in a calm mood, accepting the doctor’s treatment, looking forward to obtaining miraculous results.
