It’s May again, and this year May 7 is the 15th World Asthma Day, with the theme “Asthma is manageable”. World Asthma Day is an event launched by the World Health Organization to raise awareness of the current status of asthma and to enhance the prevention, treatment and management of the disease for patients and the public. This year’s theme “Asthma can be controlled” is still of great relevance in China today, as all current treatments for asthma, including hormones, IgE monoclonal antibodies, and bronchoscopic thermotherapy, are used to control asthma and reduce the symptoms and pain of asthma attacks. Current scientific developments have reached the point where asthma can be controlled and its harmful effects minimized. Asthma must be maintained after control. Generally, the dosage of medication should be reduced after 3 months of control, once every three months until the minimum dose is maintained. It is not advisable to stop the medication immediately after control, and most relapses occur after stopping the medication. To date, asthma is not curable and a “cure for asthma” is not achievable anywhere in the world today. Stopping medication because it is “cured” is a mistake and delays treatment. In order to better understand the use of asthma medication, we have developed a measurement of nitric oxide in the expiratory breath, which can better detect the inflammation of the asthma airways and more accurately guide the use of medication. We hope that all asthma patients can do what the slogan of this year’s Asthma Day says, “Asthma can be controlled”. With standard treatment, most asthma can be controlled.
