Abdominal breathing has the benefit of relaxing the body and reducing anxiety. In the case of respiratory disorders, the lack of chest breathing function can be supplemented by abdominal breathing. Abdominal breathing is inherently relaxing and thus effective in reducing anxiety, plus it activates a number of physiological mechanisms that promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, having a multiplier effect. Abdominal breathing improves the oxygen supply to the brain and muscular system, guides the body into a calm and peaceful emotional state, and allows attention to be dispersed from the mind to all parts of the body. Abdominal breathing itself can cause some relaxation responses. Because anxiety or autonomic arousal most often occurs with shallow, fast breathing, abdominal breathing replaces this shallow, fast breathing in a more relaxing way, which in turn reduces anxiety. In the case of respiratory disorders, if chest breathing is not functioning adequately, it can also be supplemented by abdominal breathing.
