Untreated pituitary tumors are at risk of worsening symptoms associated with abnormal hormone levels, and in exceptional cases, pituitary strokes, clinical manifestations related to the enlargement and proliferation of pituitary tumors. Untreated pituitary tumors that continue to proliferate and enlarge without control can lead to compression of tissues and structures around the skull and brain, such as the optic nerve and visual crossover, and in severe cases, blindness in both eyes can occur. If a pituitary tumor suddenly hemorrhages and infarcts at some point, the condition of pituitary stroke can occur. Pituitary stroke is a common endocrine emergency, and can be life-threatening if not treated in time. If left untreated, persistently high levels of hormone production have the potential to produce very serious endocrine diseases related to the hormones involved.
