If the eye is red and swollen at the base of the eyelashes, and if there are small hard nodules that are localized and painful to touch, the initial consideration is blepharitis and mostly exophthalmos, which is caused after infection of the sebaceous or sweat glands of the eyelid, mostly related to staphylococcal infection. So early on, you can use wet and hot compresses, topical antibiotic eye drops on the eyes and antibiotic eye ointment on the conjunctival sac to help control the inflammation. Pus formation at the base of the eyelashes will be noticed after a few days, consider making an incision on the skin surface parallel to the lid margin to drain the pus. Redness and swelling at the base of the eyelashes may also be blepharitis, which may be related to abnormal lid gland function, refractive error, malnutrition or cosmetic irritation, often manifesting as redness and scaling changes at the lid margin, and in some patients, small ulcers may also develop, requiring treatment for the cause. It is important to keep the eyes clean and can be treated with antibiotics and hormonal ointments for a short period of time.
