Pits in the calves on pressure are a sign of depressed edema. There are two types of edema: pathologic and physiologic. Physiologic includes pregnancy and some senile edema. Pathologic includes malnutritional edema with hypoproteinemia. Renal insufficiency, reduced urination, water in the body can not be excreted, resulting in edema. Ascites, hypoproteinemia, and lower extremity edema occur in the decompensated stage of cirrhosis. Cardiac insufficiency, especially right heart insufficiency. Unilateral pits in the lower legs may be caused by deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs and poor lymphatic return.
