Management of nasal bone fractures

Nasal fractures are caused by direct violence with septal fractures, cartilage dislocation, and mucosal tears, and can occur alone or simultaneously with other jaw fractures. The external nose protrudes from the face and is vulnerable to injury from impact and fall. External nasal trauma accounts for 50% of nasal trauma, among which lacerations and nasal bone fractures are common. The type of fracture is related to the direction and size of the violence. What should be done when a nasal fracture occurs? In general, nasal fractures are best treated “cold” immediately. Patients with nasal trauma can apply ice immediately to reduce local bleeding and swelling, as well as to reduce pain, and the fracture should be treated within two to three hours of the trauma, usually not more than 14 days, to avoid malunion. Patients should visit the ENT department of a hospital as soon as possible so that the doctor can examine the injured area to clarify the extent of the injury and give appropriate treatment. If a nasal fracture is not treated in time, the displaced bone will not return to its original position and the nose will be skewed and collapsed, affecting the facial appearance. If the wound on the nose is not closed in time, it will leave a bigger scar, which will also affect the facial appearance. If the nasal septum displacement and fracture are not treated at the same time, one or both nasal congestion will occur, which will affect the ventilation function of the nose, and will also easily cause rhinitis and affect sleep, and can even lead to obstructive apnea syndrome, resulting in a decrease in oxygen saturation during sleep. How to prevent nasal bone fracture? It is important to protect yourself when playing intense sports. Because the nose is in the center of the face and is the most prominent part, it bears the brunt of impact injuries to the face. In ball games, when colliding with others, you should tilt your face to the side as much as possible and not meet head-on. When playing a rival sport with physical contact, you can wear a nose shield to prevent nasal injuries.
