The ancient formula “three and a half taels” for lumbar muscle strain

The ancient formula “Three and a half taels” is used to treat lumbar muscle strain. 1. Composition and usage of the formula “Three and a half taels”: 1 tael each of Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng and Radix Astragali (about 30g), half a tael each of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix et Rhizoma Dogwood and Radix et Rhizoma Niubizi (about 15g). The total amount of each post is three and a half taels (equivalent to 105g). First, pour 2 taels of yellow wine into the herbs and soak them for 1 hour before putting them into water to decoct. The significance of soaking in yellow wine is that yellow wine as a medicinal guide has the effect of opening the channels and moving the meridians, invigorating the blood and warming the Yang. At the same time, the ethanol in yellow wine can fully dissolve the active ingredients in the herbs and bring out the medicinal power. 2.Pharmacological analysis Lu Dang Ginseng encourages qi and blood, strengthens the spleen, generates body fluid and calms the mind. Roasted Astragalus nourishes Qi and strengthens the surface of the body, diuresis, promotes sores, raises pus and generates muscle. Radix Angelicae Sinensis tonifies blood, invigorates the blood, moistens dryness, slips the intestines and grows muscles. Dog’s spine warms the liver and kidney, regulates all the veins, strengthens the waist and knees, and strengthens the spine. Huai Niu Knee tonifies the liver and kidney and can induce the downward movement of the herbs to treat bone pain in the waist and knees and foot impotence. The combination of these herbs is effective in benefiting qi and fixing the surface, tonifying blood and activating it, strengthening tendons and bones, and promoting the circulation of meridians and muscles. Therefore, it can treat swelling of the lumbar muscles, constriction and convulsion, cold and pain, fatigue, impotence and weakness of the lower limbs, aggravation after midnight, inability to turn over and sleep peacefully, and other symptoms of strain and injury. 3. Analysis of the pathogenesis Because of deficiency of qi and blood, qi and blood do not run smoothly, see the lumbar cold or soreness, bone softness and weakness. The deficiency of qi and blood weakens the moisturizing effect on the meridians, tendons and skin, resulting in abnormal movement or sensation of the limbs. The liver is the organ that collects blood. A deficiency of liver blood cannot moisten the tendons and veins, resulting in numbness of the limbs and unfavorable joints. The waist is the house of the kidney, and the kidney is the master of the bone. If the kidney yang and kidney qi are weak and the kidney essence is not full, then it cannot warm and nourish the waist and knees. The majority of patients with lumbar muscle strain have clinical manifestations of deficiency of qi and blood and deficiency of liver and kidney. 4. Discussion About four-fifths of the lumbar muscle strain cases admitted to the clinic are women. Most of them are women with obesity and qi deficiency. The age of prevalence is 21 to 46 years old. Either they get up too early to work after childbirth, or they have too many children, or they are tired from domestic and agricultural work, or they are engaged in long-term bending and squatting physical labor. These patients are generally cured after the first consultation with five posts of “three and a half”. In order to enhance the effectiveness of treatment, they are asked to go home to lie flat on a hard bed, lumbar pad a small pillow (about 15cm wide, about 6cm high in the middle, low on both sides, curved, about 40cm long soft pillow pad above the belt, 1 to 5 lumbar vertebrae between the spinous process). This can maintain the normal physiological curvature of the waist, and also relax the muscles of the waist that are strained during the day, relieving pain and relaxing muscle spasm. Clinically, only a few patients have requested for additional medication because they have been re-visited or are afraid of relapse. Of course, there are also some patients who do not take the medication, and the reasons for this are: (1) they cannot rest completely while taking the medication. ② Complications. Such as lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis (osteophytes, osteoporosis), rheumatism, rheumatoid spondylitis and so on. This formula is particularly effective for women with postpartum lumbar muscle strain.
