Gastric edema generally refers to edema of the gastric mucosa. It is common in acute and chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, bile reflux gastritis, etc. Gastric edema caused by this disease usually does not cause ascites. On the other hand, eosinophilic gastroenteritis, Menetrier’s disease and granulomatous diseases of the stomach and gastric cancer may cause ascites.
Ascites refers to a pathological condition in which too much free fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity and can be triggered by a variety of diseases. Regarding the incidence of ascites caused by gastric diseases is low, but still should not be ignored. Some benign and malignant gastric diseases can induce ascites.
Benign gastric diseases that induce ascites mainly include eosinophilic gastroenteritis, Menetrier’s disease and granulomatous disease, etc. Malignant gastric diseases mainly include gastric cancer, primary gastric lymphoma and gastrointestinal mesenchymal stromal tumor.
Common clinical conditions that can cause ascites include hypoproteinemia due to malnutrition, and ascites in combination with liver disease, kidney disease, and tumor-related diseases. For example, decompensated cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, renal failure, intestinal tumors, hepatocellular carcinoma, peritonitis and so on.
If gastric edema is combined with ascites, it is necessary to further improve relevant examinations such as liver and kidney function, tumor markers and so on to clarify the cause of the disease and then symptomatic treatment.
