Treatment of fever and vomiting in young children

Young children with fever and vomiting need to find a specific cause. It is mostly seen in respiratory infections, or gastrointestinal infections. If the vomiting is mild, feeding can be suspended for 4 hours and most of it can be relieved; if the vomiting is more severe, antiemetic and stomach protector medications can be used. Routine blood tests are needed to help determine whether it is a bacterial infection or a concurrent infection, and to diagnose different pathogenic microorganisms and use different anti-infective treatments. It is also important to avoid dehydration and electrolyte disturbance. Oral rehydration salts can be administered, and if vomiting is frequent, it can be treated by intravenous rehydration. It is also necessary to exclude central nervous system infections. Usually, in addition to fever and vomiting, the child is poorly spirited with headache, neck tonicity, and some patients may have convulsions. If there is a central nervous system infection, immediate hospitalization is required. A febrile child can be physically cooled or, if the temperature exceeds 38.5 degrees, oral antipyretic medication can be administered.
