What to look for when putting on and taking off surgical gowns

Gowning requires attention to the steps of washing hands first, then gowning, belting, and finally gloving. When removing the surgical gown, remove the gown first, then the gloves. Before the start of surgery, the principle of asepsis should be strictly adhered to. First of all, after the surgical personnel have completed three times of hand hygiene disinfection (hand brushing, immersion disinfection, etc.), they complete the dressing of the surgical gown with the help of the person who assists in the dressing, during the dressing process, the hand of the person who wears the gown should not touch the reverse side of the sterile gown, and during the passing of the waist belt, both hands should be crossed to pass the belt, and finally complete the glove wearing. Thereafter, care needs to be taken that the gowner’s area below the shoulder, above the waist, and between the arms bilaterally is sterile to avoid contamination. When removing the surgical gown, the person assisting in the removal of the gown should unbuckle the back belt and then cross his/her hands to remove the gown, taking care not to touch himself/herself during this process. Finally, when the gown reaches the hands, remove it together with the gloves.
